African Greys are known for their unbelievable intelligence and are believed to have brain capability similar to a four year old, which is quite amazing for a bird! Their talking ability is unique and they can learn not only words, but also songs, poems, etc. They are also known to learn sophisticated tricks. Their mimicking ability is outstanding and they can pick up and imitate the actual voices of their family members.
There are two main variations of African Greys in aviculture: Congo anf Timneh African Greys. Congos are lighter grey color with a bright red tail, and Timnehs are darker in color with a maroon colored tail. Life span of African Greys is rather long, and they are known to live up to 70 years of age. African Greys are not the cuddliest of all pet birds, but some are known to enjoy cuddles with their favorite person. Greys are known to pick a "favorite" person in the family, and sometimes become a "one person bird". Frequent handling and interaction with all family members help to keep the bird from becoming a "one person bird".
At Beaks and Paws we raise both Congos and Timnehs African Greys.
