Macaws come from South America and their vibrant and colorful plumages have been fascinating
bird lovers and fanciers all over the world for many years. These are some of the biggest birds kept
as pets and are known for their intelligence and powerful personality. Macaws have a good talking
ability and can learn a variety of tricks, including some of the very sophisticated ones.
Macaws love to chew and have very powerful beaks. They require a large cage or flight with plenty
of toys to chew on. Macaws also need consistent training and should be taught boundaries early
on. Failure to do so will cause macaws to learn how to train and manipulate their owners instead
through biting, screaming, or feather plucking. With correct training, macaws make amazing pets
and are a real joy to have as a family member.
Macaws can be quite loud and are not recommended for apartment dwellers.
They require a high protein diet that should include pellets, fruits, veggies, nuts, etc.
Macaws that are commonly kept as pets include Blue and Gold, Scarlet, Military, Green Wing,
Hahns mini macaw, and a number of hybrids are becoming popular as well.
